We hear a lot in the media about antioxidants, but what are they exactly and how much do we really need?
Well actually, our ability to stay free of disease depends greatly on the balance between our exposure to harmful free radicals and our intake of protective antioxidants.
So lets start with free radicals, these are unstable molecules in the body. We naturally generate free radicals through normal processes such as breathing and digesting so to combat these nasty’s our bodies defense system also produces a certain amount of antioxidants. Maintaining a state of homeostasis, balance.
The problem therefore comes from environmental factors such as pollution, UV rays and for the majority of us, our diets. To maintain balance we need to combat these additional free radicals with antioxidants found in essential micronutrients, which must be supplied in our diets.
So what happens if we just let the free radicals run riot? These damaged cells are on a hunt for electrons and will steal them from other healthy cells. This rampage creates even more damaged cells for us to combat leaving mutated cells to grow and reproduce abnormally, quickly, creating the seed for disease.
To sum up the power of antioxidants, they donate this must-needed electron to the free radical, ending its rampage of terror and terminating the chain reaction before more vital molecules are damaged.
